This week we made our own embossers. Yes, you heard right. We actually made our own embossers. It was of a piece of cake. Well, it was actually a cupcake. Bad pun, #sorrynotsorry. I’ve made a flower just to show you.
We made and used royal icing to pipe out the design. To stiffen up the royal icing, and to make sure it didn’t fall apart when we embossed it onto the sugarpaste, we added some gum tragacanth to the royal icing.
Gum tragacanth is basically a fine powder, which you add to sugarpaste or royal icing to stiffen it up. You could add tylo powder, but that works quite fast, so you would have to be the flash (cw fans anyone?) to pipe your design out. Funnily enough, my dad was making something which needed gum tragacanth, except in its natural form. It was interesting to see where the powder form came from. LOOK!
So cool, right!!!??
Anyway, we piped our cupcake design using the royal icing onto a piece of acrylic (I used an empty CD case here, but I much prefer acrylic as it doesn’t have the rim at the bottom that the CD case those. Although the CD case works fine). Stick your template on the inside of the case and pipe on the outside.
Then, on our sugarpaste cut outs, which we dusted with some icing sugar so that the icing wouldn’t stick, we pressed in the acrylic to emboss the design.
Next week I’ll be painting these designs, so stay tuned!
