I got there on time this time! Woohoo.
For this week, we needed:
- Icing sugar
- Palette Knife
- Food colouring
- Small Knife
- Cocktail sticks
So, week two was all about royal icing. We learnt how to make it, and it’s not nearly as hard as I thought it was to make! A bit of meri-white, icing sugar and water, and you’re done. We coloured our royal icing (mine was pink, of course), learnt about the different consistencies, and then piped over a template, practising straight lines, and some curved lines.
It’s very different to buttercream, that’s for sure. It sort of has a life of its own. To colour it, we used gel food colours, so as not to change the consistency.
We also learnt how to make piping bags from parchment paper. I’ve never bothered before; my go to was always plastic disposable piping bags. But using these is way cheaper than buying disposable ones. I was always put off making them, just because whenever I did, the piping bag would never be very stable or tight. Being taught how to make them properly is great!
I’ve been practising whenever I find the time, so I have some pictures. The lines are nowhere near as neat and as straight as they could be, but practice makes perfect!
